Jacmel- Day1

Our venue today is a hotel in downtown Jacmel, the Levya Hotel.

It is a sprawling hotel which sits on a hill overlooking the ocean.

We are very spread out here, with education, screening, varnish and waiting downstairs.

And treatment and post-op are located upstairs.

As of 9:15 this morning we have seen about 500 children with approximately 10% requiring extraction.

We are getting terrific help from the NGO that we are working with named 'Goals Beyond the Net.'  I wrote about them in yesterday's post.

The peaceful Haitian morning is sometimes interrupted by the scream of a nervous child. We work very hard to keep the kids calm. Like a set of falling dominoes, the crying will often move from one child to another. We are happy that the rooms are well ventilated because the humidity has, of late, been very high.

We are waiting for the next group of students to arrive. And during the break I can't help but notice signs of the 2010 earthquake.

Unfortunately, as often happens, a school cancelled at the last minute. We still managed to see over 600 children, of which about 20 percent required extractions. I'll update with more info, but now we're off for the long ride to PAP.
